I really enjoy drawing, always have. I love spending hours wrapped up in the gentle art of sketching, coaxing a likeness out of the subject and capturing it on paper. I draw to record. I draw to relax and I draw to paint. Drawing helps me to plan compositions and identify tonal relationships. It allows me to paint with confidence as accuracy and planning are built into the foundations.
In the Cowes Library Drawing Group, I focus on these observational drawing techniques. Observational drawing is about looking at your subject and drawing what you see, not what you think you see or feel. In the sessions we look at ways to improve hand/eye coordination, understand how light and shade create shape and form and improve accuracy from the beginning with plotting, measuring and recognising shapes and spaces.
Every week there will be a different theme with accompanying items to draw and different techniques and tools to think about. Over 10 sessions we will cover a variety of subjects including; mark-making, tonal techniques for shading, form and colour, the power of a line and many, many more!

I aim to:
- Get you to draw every week and build confidence in your drawing ability.
- Introduce ideas, techniques and inspiration to help you and develop your interest.
- Do all the above in a friendly, respectful and supportive environment (with hot beverages and good biscuits!)
I will:
- Get you to draw from 3D objects.
- Focus on observational drawing with a view to encourage you into painting or pastel work to explore colour.
- Encourage you to learn from and inspire each other.
- Occasionally ask you to draw the same or similar objects, but with a different technique, material or thought process to broaden your skills and understanding.
- Ask you to bring a 2H and a 2B pencil. An eraser and a sketchbook.
- Ask you to pay £12 either on or before the session.
I will not:
- Critique your work.
- Ask you to critique other’s work.
- Forget the biscuits.
Whatever stage you’re at on your drawing journey, you’re more than welcome to join the group. If you’d like to know more or book a place then please get in touch.
